Some of you may have been wondering "why is the google.com homepage redirecting to google.co.uk?". It seems they have introduced a new feature to localise searches based on the geographic location of your IP address (The unique number automatically assigned to you when you connect to the internet, to allow other computers to identify and send back data you request). While this may seem like a good idea at first, it can prove troublesome when you desire specific results for checking your search engine positioning etc.
Google does this by inserting information into a cookie that it stores on your computer. There is however a fix if you wish to go directly to the google.com homepage without redirecting. Simply go to the page "http://www.google.com/ncr" into a browser window to permanently modify the cookie to allow you to browse the main google.com site. |
