:: Questions Frequently Asked by New Clients ::
1. I want to put my business online,
but I don't know where to start. Can you help me?
Absolutely! Jam Design UK Ltd. offers free initial
consultation on all website services—just contact
us. For in-depth assistance on your Internet strategies, we offer expert
consulting services at competitive rates.
2. Do you redesign existing sites?
Yes. We can usually redesign an existing site more
quickly, and for less money, than building one from scratch. Send us your
existing site's URL (Web address) and a general idea of what you'd like
to do, and we'll be glad to give you an estimate.
3. I have a great idea for a business
website, but how do I know you won't steal my idea?
To give you an estimate, we don't need to know specifically
what you plan to do with your site. Just give us some general information:
whether you'll be selling products or services; how many pages you think
you'll need; any special features (shopping carts, etc.). If you decide
to hire us, you'll receive a non-disclosure agreements guaranteeing the
confidentiality of all materials you submit to us and protecting your intellectual
property rights.
4. Your services seem geared towards
business. Do you design websites for individuals, too?
Of course! Our competitive and flexible pricing makes
professional website design affordable for individuals and organizations.
We can build a website for your club; a family reunion, wedding, or other
special event; a tribute to a special person - the possibilities are endless.
Tell us what you have in mind.
5. I have a relative/friend that can
make websites.
Why should I spend the money on a professional
company?
We believe a website should present the same qualities
and characteristics that your customers experience when they walk through
your door. Going with a professional company will ensure a well organized,
well maintained website that will incorporate your current marketing strategies.
Some of the problems with designing in-house include broken links, large
or unclear graphics, unorganized information, inconsistent navigation, and
little to no online promotion once the website is complete; it can also
be very time consuming and frustrating.
6. Do you have a security policy?
We wouldn't have set up online unless we had absolute
confidence that we could guarantee the privacy and security of your company's
information.
We consider the information you give us about your company to be 'sensitive
data'. This includes your company's address, telephone number and any other
information you give us during the development of your site.
All of this information is protected by a technology called SSL (Secure
Socket Layer). SSL is an industry-standard technology. All sensitive data
is encrypted (turned into a code) in such a way that it cannot be read by
anybody who is not authorised to do so. This system is far more secure,
for example, than giving your credit or debit card details over the phone
when booking cinema tickets or when paying for a meal in a restaurant.
All websites that use SSL technology need to be certificated. In order to
gain a certificate, the company behind the website must satisfy the certificating
authority that it has taken all necessary measures to protect your personal
information.
Network Security
Jam Design's internal network is protected by a secure firewall. Firewalls
are highly effective barriers that protect against unauthorised entry to
computer systems. Basically, no one can get to your information without
your authorisation.
All access to the internal network, including dial-in, e-mail and Internet
access, are permitted only to authorized users. Computer accounts are password-protected
and regular security audits are conducted to ensure that only secured passwords
are used. Audit trails of Internet access and usage are also kept.
Our privacy policy
We respect your absolute right to confidentiality. Because of this, no information
that you give us about your business will ever be given or sold to any other
organisation under any circumstance without your permission.
We can also provide non-disclosure agreements to be signed with our clients
as witness for clients wishing to have the above in writing.
7. How are the servers set up?
We use a customised Slackware Linux distribution on our public
facing servers running as up-to-date a setup as we know to be stable and
reliable. We maintain a private duplicate server to test the latest updates
before updating our public server systems. We will not just jump at the
latest updates, preferring instead to offer reliable hosting above the bleeding
edge of untested software.
All our servers run in 2U rack case units in clean, climate controlled rooms with 24 hour monitoring and on site security.
8. What's the physical security like?
As mentioned above, both server farms have 24/7 onsite security personnel monitoring access to and from the building. Video with night-vision lenses is used outside the building and there are video cameras on all floors and corridors inside the building.
We have our own private racks which are protected by both combination and key locks. Distribution of these keys is tightly controlled and monitored.
9. How is data moved and stored?
Inside the building all our racks are interconnected via gigabit fibre optic cable connected to a gigabit Netgear switch. Data is stored on Maxtor UDMA 133 hard disks and customer accounts backed up nightly to CD-RW by an automated process. Customers are given access to their files by FTP and SSH (secure Telnet).
10. What's the backup strategy?
As previously mentioned, all customer accounts are backed up nightly to CD-RW, however we can install tape backup drives or RAID disk setups upon request. Customers are of course free to backup their data via FTP and are in fact advised to do so to avoid a recovery fee should they accidentally overwrite or delete one of their files and require it to be recalled from a backup.
All MySQL databases, tables and contents are included in the nightly backup.
11. How are the scripts written?
All our scripts are written by hand by one of our programmers and tested internally before going live on a client's web site. We are happy to update or modify existing scripts that a client may have as well as setting up and installing most commercial scripts that clients may have purchased elsewhere.
12. How long does it take for a website/design to be completed?
The timescale for a project is generally dictated by the clients requirements. The most common delay in the creation of most sites is waiting for content to be sent to us by the client.
